Technically demanding RCC dam construction in Jordan
The new Al-Wehdah Dam on the Yarmouk River in Jordan is a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam, designed for construction in two stages. The first stage takes it to 70 m high to a crest elevation of 116 m and the second stage involves raising it by 30 m to a crest elevation of approximately 146 m. The owner required that provisions should be included to permit the raising of the dam at a later stage. BBR Network Member Marwan Alkurdi & Partners was responsible for construction of all the CVC (Conventional Vibrated Concrete), plus all the required upstream and downstream facing formwork – with climbing formwork at the upstream face and stepped formwork at the downstream face – and for gallery construction. The very tight schedule demanded the use of special climbing formwork and scaffolding – plus a 24-hour working cycle, as the RCC work was carried out in a continuous 24-hour operation.
